Query Related To Thread

Q. After stitching a ten inches length of fabric strip, the stitched length becomes less than ten inches. What are the reasons behind this?

Ans: The shortening of the fabric, the fabric yarn is displaced by the needle and so it is becoming shorter. In this case this is caused by the needle and thread count used. This is also influenced by the stitch type. In lockstitch, the locking of needle, thread and bobbin thread takes place in the centre of the fabric plies being stitched together while in chainstitch the interlooping takes place beneath the fabric plies.

ThreadThe thread is pulled under tension into the fabric. If this tension is too high, the thread becomes longer, the thread is springing back in the seam. The reason for a high tension can be a very elastic thread, a badly adjusted machine, a too fine needle, a badly adjusted bobbin opener ( lockstitch ). A too low stitch length, bad or uneven running properties, etc

The reason for shortening can also be due to a bad construction, a bad transport of the machine and many others.

The twist of thread has normally no or almost no influence.
